The Bare Necessities

Posted November 30th @ 22:41 by ncrown

This is it.  I am officially joining the ranks of the blogosphere.  To be fair, I really started blogging back in 2003 when I setup a movabletype + gallery site for cataloging the birth of our first child (Olivia).  Yes – I’m making excuses for why I haven’t been blogging while everyone else and their plant seem to be (apologies for those that haven’t taken the plunge), but I have been really busy.   All excuses aside, let me introduce you to my digital diary:  Bare Identity.

I believe words matter.  So, in order to understand what I intend to discuss and the lens that I will be using to filter the world through, we must first analyze the words that make up the name: Bare Identity.

First, let us consider the word “Bare”:

1 a: lacking a natural, usual, or appropriate covering b  (1): lacking clothing <bare feet>  (2)obsolete : bareheaded c: lacking any tool or weapon <opened the box with his bare hands>
2: open to view : exposed <laying bare their secrets>
3 a: unfurnished or scantily supplied <a bare room> b: destitute <bare of all safeguards>
4 a: having nothing left over or added <the bare necessities of life> b: mere <a bare two hours away>  c: devoid of amplification or adornment <the bare facts>
5 obsolete : worthless

I have added emphasis to the meanings of the word (above) that highlight my reason for selecting it.  In a nutshell, I intend to focus on discussing the bare essentials of the topic at hand. Put another way, I intend on being blunt and to the point, which I would hope will delight prospective readers who, if they are anything like me, have enough on their plates and could avoid subscribing to the long winded rants of another so called “expert”.  For those of you who may have stumbled upon my site by way of the first meaning above (1 a:), this site will disappoint you.  While I do intend on “baring my soul” from time to time, I  do not intend on baring anything of the physical world.  Trust me, I am doing us both a favor on that one.

Secondly, let us consider the word “Identity”:

1 a: sameness of essential or generic character in different instances b: sameness in all that constitutes the objective reality of a thing : oneness
2 a: the distinguishing character or personality of an individual : individuality b: the relation established by psychological identification
3: the condition of being the same with something described or asserted <establish the identity of stolen goods>
4: an equation that is satisfied for all values of the symbols
5: identity element

Fortunately for me, the second word is not nearly as controversial as the first.  By default this blog is a representation of my thoughts and therefore “who I am” or my “Identity”.  The word also happens to be a shorthand descriptor for the market that I am currently serving with my employer and have been working within as an architect, technical marketing manager, product manager, and product marketeer for the past 6 years.  It has been a great ride.  While I will spend quite a bit of time covering topics related to the world of Identity and Access Management (IAM), I reserve the right to discuss any topic.  And trust me, I will.

So there you have it.  “Bare Identity” will, at least for the foreseeable future, be tilted towards the world of IAM given that having an opinion on this world is expected of my profession and I, much to my own dismay, spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about my profession.  That said, “Bare Identity” is still at the core about me baring my thoughts on the “world”.

On a final note, the following disclaimer is in order:

The thoughts, views, opinions, rants, raves, and otherwise offensive material (collectively, the “content”) spewed from this site belong to me and do not necessarily reflect the same or similar views, opinions, rants, raves, etc… of my employer.

As this blog is intended to facilitate a dialog, please feel free to comment and disagree with any of     the “content”; but I reserve the right to delete any comment for any reason whatsoever (abusive,     profane, rude, or anonymous comments) – so keep it polite, please.

Lastly, l am human and have yet to complete my body of mistakes (it’s a lifelong project ya know…) so let’s all inhale a bit of humility and remember that we have more in common than not.
