Most data warehousing/analytic queries are only interested in a couple of columns in one or more tables rather than entire rows of columns. This being the case, storing data in the typical row-based format is inefficient for data warehouse purposes whereas storing data in a column-oriented fashion is much better. In a column-oriented design like Infobright, full table scans will never be performed (unless a query requests all or the majority of rows in a table); only full column scans may be. The end result is much less I/O and improved response times for column-oriented databases.
